Kindergartners viewed the artwork of Frida Kahlo before creating their own self-portraits. Students learned what the word collage means.
Kindergartners learned about artist Jim Dine. We discussed the differences between colored pencils, markers and paints. Students created textures with paint for the inside of the largest heart.
4th Graders watched a video about illustrator Eric Carle and his artwork. They then created their very own papers to use for a collage. In the collages, students were asked to create an animal as well as show foreground, middleground and background.
The 6th graders had fun looking at the artwork of Brenda York (check out her website @ http://www.brendayork.com/. We discussed how Brenda York seems to be inspired by fairy tales and nursery rhymes. The students then chose a character to recreate in an abstract style like York does. We talked about oil pastels and different effects that could be achieved with the medium. Students used different watercolor techniques to complete the work. They really enjoyed this project and I loved the results! It was important that the students left the viewers "clues" as to who their character was- see if you can figure them out!
