African Silhouettes

4th Graders learned about South Africa. We looked at pictures of safari animals and pictures from the city. Many students were surprised that a city in South Africa looks just like a city here in the U.S.

The first thing we did was made the colorful backgrounds. The cool effects were made with bleeding tissue paper. Students were asked to choose either warm or cool colors. Then students drew the outline of an African animals and plants of their choice. The following class period when the papers were dry, the animals were traced onto the background paper with carbon paper and filled in with black tempera paint to create silhouettes.
