Unit Objectives:

1. Identify artwork created by Alexander Calder
2. Understand what "Abstract" means when referring to art
3. Create an abstract sculpture using wire and nylon

Every year the New Ulm Lion's Club sponsors a Peace Poster contest. Local judges select first, second and third place winners from Washington Elementary. These students are awarded a monetary prize of $50, $20, and $15 respectively, in the form of New Ulm Chamber Dollars. Judging will take place and winners chosen in early November.

Unit Objectives:

1. Demonstrate the use of colored pencil techniques: primarily color blending and shading
2. Create a Peace Poster using the theme "Our World, Our Future"
3. Write an artist statement

Native American Parfleche

4th Graders have now completed the Native American Parfleche unit

Unit Objectives:

1. Know the difference between organic and geometric shapes
2. Explain what the parfleche tells us about how Minnesota Native Americans lived
3. Create a parfleche that uses a symmetrical design

Welcome Back!

The 2013-2014 school year is well underway. It is my goal to update this blog weekly so parents and viewers know what is going on in the art room. While many of the lessons and projects we complete this year will be old favorites that I've posted before, I've got new ideas in the works. With a lot of focus shifting to technology and iPads, you are sure to see more technology based projects. I am excited to see what this year has in store for Washington Elementary's young artists!
